June Chapter Update from ASAS New Jersey

Meet Alexis, Our New Program Manager

Alexis was born and raised in the City of Newark, NJ.

She attended Rutgers University Newark, where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and her Master's in Public Administration at Rutgers Newark with the school of SPAA. As an experienced higher education professional, she understands the importance of the work ASAS New Jersey does and is excited to join the New Jersey Chapter.

Alexis had multiple roles at the Center for Pre-College Programs at Rutgers University Newark. She was a college mentor, helping high school scholars transition to higher education. She also worked as the Programs Officer for the Young Scholars and Scholars Program at SEEDS Access Changes Everything. Alexis is an Aspen Young Leader Fellow, Honors Living Learning Community Alum, and a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Just yesterday, June 15, 2023, Alexis was recognized during the 15th Anniversary of Rutgers Future Scholars as one of the program's top 15 Professionals! Alexis' goal in life is to continue to impact students who have a similar upbringing to her, intending to change, inspire, and enhance their future. We are excited to have Alexis join the After School All Stars New Jersey Team.

Please Join us in welcoming Alexis to the Team!

Laylah’s Garden

This week, we gathered at Achieve Community Charter School to unveil “Laylah’s Garden”.

Laylah’s Garden is a garden at Mildred Helms Park dedicated to Laylah Clark; a student of Achieve and ASAS New Jersey who passed away tragically last summer.

This garden will stand as a symbol of hope, growth, and solace for the community in which Laylah once resided.

We want to thank the USDA, Whole Foods, Greater Newark Conservancy, the Staff & Students of Achieve Community Charter School, and everyone who has supported this initiative.

People’s Prep Interns

Our chapter has great relationships with local schools such as People’s Prep High School.

Over the past few years, we have had the opportunity to have some of their amazing students to intern with us during their Internship Class at People’s Prep. This winter and spring, we had three interns from People’s Prep to intern with us. With Gail Campbell (Program Manager) and Stephen-Michael Thompson (Marketing & Development Manager) as their supervisors, our interns brought great value to our chapter!

We are excited for what the future holds for Jasene, Arianna, and Gift!
